How to clean an aquarium filter without destabilising the tank
A practical sequence for filter maintenance and common mistakes to avoid.
Diagnose first
Reduced flow may come from a dirty sponge, tubing, impeller or densely packed media. Do not automatically replace every medium.
Work in stages
Rinse mechanical media in removed aquarium water when you want to reduce abrupt changes for microorganisms. Service components in sequence and record the date.
Check after restart
Inspect for leaks, flow and abnormal noise. After major work, observe livestock and water parameters more frequently.
